Review: (500) Days of Summer

I just finished watching this and felt I should do a more pleasant, less existential, less depressing blog post.

I had been wanting to check this out for a few months and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The film is the story of Tom (Joseph Gordon Levitt) and Summer (Zooey Deschanel). First off, I really must say, I love Zooey Deschanel. She's really becoming one of my favorite actresses b/c she's just so good. Her performances are always endearing and quirky yet she's just got that subtle little something about her that you can't quite put your finger on but puts her on a bit of a different level than other women. And Joseph Gordon Levitt, in my opinion, has to be one of the most underrated actors out there. I'm sure you probly remember him from 3rd Rock From the Sun, which he was always solid on.

So how it starts off even before the movie starts which is great, is they have the little this is a work of fiction and any similarity to persons living or dead... blah blah blah. Followed by 'especially you Jenny Beckman. Bitch.' That's one example of what the movie is like. It's a touching funny sweet movie that has some hilariously random jokes in it. Another one I laughed at, Tom works at greeting card company and he's goin thru a difficult period. The boss brings him in to discuss a card he wrote. 'Roses are red, violets are blue. Fuck you whore.' Also, maybe my favorite scene in the movie b/c I've played this game, is Tom and Summer sitting in the park playing the penis game. I don't know the actual name of it or if it has an actual name. If you're not familiar allow me to explain. Basically you go back and forth saying penis, each time saying it louder than when they said it. You start out quiet and fairly quickly get up to yelling it. It's such a funny scene. Reminded me of playing it on a roadtrip to Winnipeg one time. I was playing it with a guy named Travis while me, him, Chris and Dallas were on our way to see WWE. Needless to say, he's considerably bigger and louder than I am and won.

Getting back to the movie, it jumps around the timeline throughout, showing different segments of the courtship and aftermath of the relationship, which was well done. The whole way the movie's been edited and put together I quite liked. There's some beautifully shot scenes in this.

So highly recommend you check this out. Good acting, good story, very good music in it too.
