Continuing in the tradition of sharing the transcript for the Who the F is Justin Bieber segment of the Brett Carruthers show on CJ 106 (that's not the actual name of the show but since the show doesn't have a name we'll go with it.) Haven't done one in awhile, so let me know what ya think.
Who the F is Justin Bieber?
The right to say and think whatever you please is something I strongly believe in but of course where, and indeed when, that begins and ends is a matter of much debate.
Lots of people go overboard from time to time without meaning to. The real problem is people who do it continually, on purpose, just for the sake of being cruel and creating media buzz. Such is the plan of action for the Westboro Baptist Church; A group that goes to such disgusting lengths to get attention that they make Kanye West look like J.D. Salinger.
I don’t think I need go too in depth down the list of their crazy stunts. The numerous besmirchings of soldier funerals, a demonstration near the final resting place of the legendary Ronnie James Dio and a gay campaign that would illicit some scholars to speculate on whether they doth protest too much. Even the majority of leader Fred Phelps family wants nothing to do with him.
Indeed the fanatical religious group is slightly less popular than Michelle Bachmann at a Natural History event. The latest target is rock and roll icons the Foo Fighters. The group is planning on protesting next week’s Foo concert in Kansas over the band’s cheeky Hot Buns tour announcement video. In the clip uploaded to the band’s youtube page, Dave Grohl and company play truck drivers who stop at a diner to shower and clean each other up. It’s quite tongue in cheek and fits in well with recent odd celebrity offerings like Jim Carrey professing his love to Emma Stone (which I think could totally work as part of some weird viral campaign for something.)
As we have learned though, the extremist group does not have a sense of humour. And if they do it’s either for the worst comedian in the world or for someone going on a racist rant like Michael Richards or Tracy Morgan. Another thing we know, which would dovetail nicely with the hot buns video, is that Dave Grohl is not shy about voicing his opinion. Just ask Ryan Murphy or the guy trying to fight with someone at the band’s Itunes Festival show.
Both of which got supremely cussed out for comparatively little reason. If he chose to freely comment on this, the ensuing storm would make Tony Montana from Scarface blush.

New Demo
I've been working on updating my on-air demo. Got some new clips and switched out a couple of the old ones that I think weren't as good. One thing I was unsure about: the majority of the clips all have secondary audio clips for the punch line. I wasn't sure if it's a good idea to have a lot of that on there or not. I think it depends on the person probably, some like it and some don't think it works. I'd love to know what you think, so any comments you got let 'em fly. I'm also gonna put the old demo on their for comparison's sake.

The ticketmaster one there was two different parts I considered using. I thought the drug market comparison might be a little much so I had used a line I liked about using dirty business men trying to screw you (ticketmaster) over scalpers. Turning what would maybe be the usual perception of the two upside down. But it just didn't sound natural and just didn't have the right flow to it.

I have an interview tomorrow for a creative writer job in Sudbury, Ontario. So, yay. I'd had like 3 interviews in the last 2 months or so, 1 and half months. Or at least it would've been 3 but the one guy never got back to me after initially emailing about an interview. Which is good. and weird too. I hadn't had any interviews from September to February. Too bad it's really early in the morning. He said it could be moved to later but I felt weird about inquiring about that. Maybe it would affect how I came off or something and is something I shouldn't be worrying about as something looking for a job, I don't know. (Also I don't know if that was correct usage there. Or if it should be effect. I'm too lazy to bother looking it up.)

I'm goin to 3 concerts now this summer. Awesome. Getting tickets for Rock on the Range Canada solely because it's headlined by Alice in Chains (!)No way I'm missing that. I've even found people to go with, which is cool.

In terms of movies: I saw Insidious. Scary as hell. Go see it, it's quite good, very old school sorta feel to it.

BEDA #3- Metal July
So I got my tickets for A Perfect Circle in July in Winnipeg. Awesome. Row 10, should be an amazing show. Like nobody wanted to go though. I posted on facebook, texted like 15 people, bumpkus. One person is goin and he would pretty go to anything. Disappointing.
Also, sweet, same friend I'm goin with, got 4 free vip tickets for Slayer, Rob Zombie and Exodus. Nice! So I get to bookend July with two hard rock/metal concerts. Slayer I'm not hugely into but Exodus I like and Rob Zombie puts on a good show.

Finally, and this really has nothing to do with anything. Am I the only one who finds it a little weird when you get notifications on facebook of people 'liking' photos of yours from like a year ago or more? I suppose that's the point of facebook pictures but it still seems slightly odd. And I don't mean people you're really close with, good friends etc. I mean friends that you don't really talk to or see all that often. You'll talk maybe once every couple of months. I'm just not really the sort of person that goes through random old pictures people have on their profile.

BEDA
So it was my intention to do BEDA or Blog Every Day in April but I never really got around to starting it. I'm a couple days late. That's procrastination for ya. So I'm not gonna be doing BEDA but I am gonna try for at least more than one blog a month. For this one, I figured I would share some of my recent radio show discussions from my segment Who The Fuck Is Justin Bieber? Most of my writing is better read than spoken I think anyway. The segment is basically about things people obsess about. My attempt at being clever haha. This is from last week.
This week’s topic is the debate between original movie ideas and remakes and sequels. People have complained for the last 5 or 6 years about the amount of remakes and sequels there are. A number that continues to rise. According to website boxofficemojo, there are a record 27 remakes or sequels coming out this year. As always, movie studios are all about the money and generally see rehashed ideas as a safer bet than an original idea. Look at recently axed Guillermo Del Toro movie At the Mountains of Madness. Even with a visionary director, James Cameron as producer and Tom Cruise rumoured for the lead, it still couldn’t get made because of the Hard R rating and massive budget it called for and studio executives didn’t wanna take the risk.
But what of movies that do get made? If you look into it, 2 common traits will appear. Scott Pilgrim Vs the World, for example, awesome as it is was criminally underseen in theatres making only $47 million worldwide. The remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street that pretty much everyone hated, made $115 million. Sucker Punch made $19 million in it’s opening weekend. Highly entertaining as it is tho, it’s very similar to Scott Pilgrim in that it’s not the sort of movie everyone will like and will probably go on to make a comparably disappointing amount. The Ring Two, generally looked down upon, made $161 million total.
So that got me thinking, maybe the problem is that people just aren’t used to seeing weird, different, original movies anymore. Think about it. The last decade at the very least has seen a large decrease in the number of different content. Especially in the horror world, a lot of wide release is recycled plots and ideas. Studios don’t want ideas like Inception, they don’t agree with the message of Kick Ass. Their scared by the Human Centipede. Movies are getting sanitized and risk free. Only problem is their cleaning out the wrong areas.
And this is about Ryan Murphy and Glee.
First of all, straight forward, I don’t like Glee. I don’t like what it is and I don’t like what it represents. I don’t get ‘it’ I guess. What’s the big deal with it?
It’s not well acted other than veteran professionals like Jane Lynch and it’s horribly over produced. I’ve watched a couple of times and I could swear all the songs sound more or less the same. I think the only worse case of a song being over produced I’ve heard is Rebecca Black. *Sidebar* If you’ve watched this video, Holy monotone Batman. You’d think it was Wednesday Addams from the Addams Family singing.
Speaking of youtube, If I wanted to hear subpar versions of classic songs, that’s where I’d go. It’d be less annoying. And that’s basically what this is. It’s a big budget highly autotuned version of amateurs singing on youtube.
Moving on to the show’s eponymous creator Ryan Murphy- how swelled is this dude’s head? He got lucky with one fluke hit show and now he thinks he can lip off any far more talented musician that he wants. First it was Slash, calling him a washed up has been. Then Kings of Leon. And now he’s likely going to be fighting with Dave Grohl.
The Foo Fighters frontman blasted him in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter recently, although I’m gonna switch out the salty pirate language for something a little friendlier. "It's every band's right, you shouldn't have to do ‘puppy’ Glee," Grohl said. "And then the guy who created Glee is so offended that we're not, like, begging to be on his ‘puppy’ show... ‘puppy’ that guy.

Writing
I wanted somewhere to post radio stuff I think up so I figured here. I'm doing a volunteer show on CJ 106 again so I've been thinking of stuff to do on there.
I've written 2 things for it so far. I'm not sure either of them are actually gonna be made or have anything done with them but I'm gonna keep writing things at least. I'm not good for finishing things because I can't really voice things myself. I can't do differing voices and there isn't anyone else around. I could roughly throw something together if I really wanted to. My roommate has a recording setup in the basement with a mic and audition. Right now I'm just playing songs and audio clips from interviews or documentaries.
Here are the first two things I wrote, the first one is a shot at Oscars and has been worked over a little bit and the second one I just wrote today as an amusing aside about what I'm sure at least one person in TV would think of when reading the same story.
Start: typical award show-like music plays
Person 1: We’re back at Hollywood’s biggest night, the stars are out tonight Bill.
Person 2: That’s always been one of my favourite things about this event Jim- Hard-working multi-millionaires taking time out of their busy schedules to have a big party about how good they all are.
Person 1: Still to come, the ‘James Cameron Overrated’ award as well as ‘Best Studio Cash Grab.’
Person 2: Highly competitive category there Jim.
Person 1: I for one am really looking forward to the ‘Academy Snubbing of the Year’
Person 2: That’s a great part of the evening. (laughs) Losers.
Person 1: Seeing as how we’re only 10 minutes overtime right now, let’s cut to some video package time filler. Here’s a fake account of how the winners are determined.
Person 1: We’ll be back in half an hour with the ‘We decided these films would be Best Picture nominees 4 months before they came out and systemically overhyped them’ award.
